Cairngorm Mountain Weekend Update
FUNICULAR OPEN EVERY DAY ENJOY A MIDSUMMER SKI - RIDE THE TRAIN - EXPLORE THE MOUNTAIN GARDEN - TAKE A WALK WITH A RANGER - BOOK A CEILIDH - EAT HOG ROAST – HELP WITH THE BIG SPRING CLEAN 20th June - The Big Spring Clean Come and help us clear up our mountain of all the litter dropped over the winter. Meet at the Ranger base at Coire Cas at 10am where gloves, bags, tea and cakes will be provided. The event is being organised by the Ski Club of Great Britain. 20th June - Hog Roast Why not treat Dad on Father's Day and come along to a Hog Roast outside the Cas Bar? The delicious food will start being served from 1pm. £4.75 per person. 20th and 21st June - Midsummer Snowsports We are celebrating midsummer by offering some snowsports on Sunday 20th and Monday 21st June. The skiing will be in a very limited area beyond the Ptarmigan Tow with uplift being provided by two temporary rope tows. Funicular only prices will apply (£9.75 adult/£6.15 junior/£8.45 senior & student). 2009-10 season tickets will also be valid. Equipment hire will not be available on the mountain but may be available from Glenmore Shop (tel. 01479 861253). Wednesday 23rd June - Guided Cairn Gorm Summit Walk 10am-2pm. Adults £12, Friends of CairnGorm Mountain £8, Children £6. Suitable clothing and footwear required. Booking advisable on 01479 861341. See web-site for more details. (Please note that there will be no guided walk on Sunday 20th June.) Ceilidhs Our ceilidh season is fast approaching. Why not come and join us on a Thursday night in July or August from 6.30pm for a night of delicious Scottish food followed by a lively ceilidh band at the highest restaurant in the UK, the Ptarmigan Restaurant. If you haven't been to a ceilidh before, you don't need to worry about not knowing the dances; the band will show you what to do. Places book up fast so call us today on 01479 861341 or book online. Wildlife Now in flower in the mountain garden are the Cloudberry, Starry Saxifrage, Marsh Marigold, Dwarf Cornel and Wild Azalea. Birds are now nesting on the mountain and some Ring Ouzel chicks have been spotted at the Ciste Car Park. It is also possible to see Ptarmigan, Red Grouse and Black Grouse. Dog owners are kindly requested to help protect these nesting birds by keeping their dogs on a lead or under very close control during this ground nesting season. Guided Walks to the Summit Every Wednesday and Sunday in June, July and August from 10am until 2pm approx. So if you would like to walk and learn about this outstanding area at the same time, this is for you. Walk Up, Train Down For an exhilarating half day, visitors can enjoy 90 minutes of rewarding walking up one of our self-guided paths, enter the Ptarmigan top station via the walkers' entrance and enjoy a relaxing lunch in the highest restaurant in the UK, before continuing their walk or purchasing a down only train ticket. (Dogs may come down on the train for a small charge). Please ensure you have appropriate clothing and footwear. Exhibitions: ‘The Big Freeze’ exhibition of photographs (and a DVD) of the exceptional winter here at CairnGorm is on display in the T Bar gallery – and Jane Lannagan’s exhibition of batik fine art paintings is on view in the Base Station. The Igloo: Get the kids to have a go at building the new all-year igloo in the Base Station. SEASON TICKETS FOR 2010/11 Season tickets for next winter 2010/11 are now on sale. Dry with some cloud on summits clearing then reforming later. Patchy sunshine with good visibility but overcast later. Temp at 900m 5-7C. Saturday 19th June: Wind N20-25 gusting to 40mph later. Isolated showers. extensive cloud. Patchy sunshine giving good visibility. Temp at 900m 1 rising to 5C. Outlook: Becoming fine and warm into next week. OPENING TIMES Every day: Ticket Office and Cas Bar will be open at 10.00am. The first public train up will be at 10.20am, with the last train up at 3.45pm (last down at 4.30pm). Shopping: New clothing stock is now in, including ranges from Weird Fish, LazyJacks and Braintree Ecofibre Fashion. With the walking season now upon us our shops have a great range of walking poles, gaiters, back-pack covers and all the essentials for heading out into the hills.
